What To Do When You’re Doing Everything Right…But Still Not Pregnant
You have a period every 45-90 days, but you rarely ovulate, so you’re doing EVERYTHING you can to fix this.
You’ve swapped plastic Tupperware for glass.
You’re taking your methylated prenatal and using “clean” products.
You’re tracking BBT religiously (which is how you realized you were never ovulating).
You work out five days a week.
You eat healthy. You’re doing everything right.
And yet…
Month after month—nothing.
You can’t seem to restore your ovulation…which means month after month: no positive pregnancy test.
Just more frustration, more supplements, more silent panic thinking to yourself: “Maybe it’s time to consider IVF.”
If this is you, you’re not alone. And more importantly—you’re not broken.
But there’s something crucial missing from your fertility strategy. And it might just be the reason you’re stuck.
The piece of the puzzle that no one is talking about: why you’re not ovulating regularly.
You can be the healthiest person in the room—eating “perfect,” exercising regularly, and eating organic and taking all the supplements—but if your body is not ovulating it’s sending you a red flag, I’m not getting what I need to ovulate and get pregnant.
This is the missing piece for so many women who are dealing with unexplained infertility. Because what looks like “unexplained” is often undiagnosed hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA).
🧠 HA is a form of functional infertility that happens when the brain (specifically the hypothalamus) shuts down reproductive hormone signaling—often in response to stress, undereating, or overexercising.
And it’s way more common than people realize. Especially when you’re as healthy as you are!
So how common is HA?
HA accounts for up to 35% of secondary amenorrhea cases (when your period stops after being previously regular) [1]
Among athletes, dancers, and women who engage in regular intense physical activity, that number rises to up to 44%. [2]
HA doesn’t just impact fertility—it’s linked to long-term consequences like reduced bone density, cardiovascular issues, and mental health challenges [2]
Unexplained infertility diagnoses were provided for over 40% of women who’s “regular period” was used as proof of ovulation, even though you can have a period without ovulating. This means that a significant portion of women diagnosed with “unexplained infertility” may actually be dealing with subclinical or misdiagnosed HA. [3]
In other words:
You might be dealing with HA…Even if your labs are “fine”, even if you’ve been diagnosed with unexplained infertility, even if you have a somewhat regular period you just never ovulate, and even if no one’s officially diagnosed you.
And that’s exactly why so many women are stuck feeling like they’re doing everything right—yet still can’t get pregnant.
Here’s what I see all the time:
You’re managing every piece of your external environment…
But meanwhile, your internal environment is in shutdown mode.
Your body is not feeling safe.
And a body that doesn’t feel safe will not ovulate.
It will not prioritize reproduction. I’m sorry to say but your body sees getting pregnant as nonessential to survival. It will do everything it can to conserve energy, minimize risk, and protect you from a perceived threat—even if that threat is just... not eating enough, pushing too hard in the gym, and living under constant pressure.
What You Don’t Need
Here’s what won’t fix this:
🚫 More supplements
🚫 A stricter diet
🚫 “Just relaxing” or taking a vacation
🚫 Jumping into IVF when your body hasn’t even had a chance to function fully
None of those things get to the root of why your period is so irregular—or why your body still isn’t ovulating.
What You Do Need to Get Pregnant Naturally
If your period is unpredictable, ovulation is never confirmed and you’re trying to conceive, the answer isn’t more restriction—it’s restoration.
You need to:
✅ Eat Enough—Especially Carbs
I can’t stress this enough: Fertility runs on fuel.
If you’re eating “healthy” but still living in a calorie deficit (even unintentionally), your body will downregulate reproductive hormone production.
It sees restriction as a threat to survival—and shuts down ovulation to conserve resources.
Especially important? Eating adequate carbs.
Low-carb and keto diets may work for blood sugar in the short term—but they wreck fertility in the long term, especially for women with HA. The MOST important macronutrient to add back into your eating is carbohydrates.
✅ Reduce Exercise Stress
Moving your body is healthy. Over-training is not.
If you’re doing HIIT, running, or intense lifting 5-6 days a week, and not pairing that with adequate fuel and rest, your body perceives it as chronic stress.
Even if you love your workouts—even if they help your mental health—your nervous system may be stuck in fight-or-flight. And a body in fight-or-flight is not going to prioritize conception.
Start by:
Taking 2–3 full rest days a week
Swapping high-intensity for walking, yoga, or stretching
Prioritizing sleep and parasympathetic activities (nervous system safety is everything)
And know that if you want to take a complete break from exercise, this is may get you even quicker results.
✅ Rebuild Hormonal Trust
This isn’t just about food and workouts. It’s about showing your body: you are safe now. This is about the right type of foods, mineral replenishment, fertility supplements, and nervous system regulation.
Because when your body truly feels safe?
✨ Your brain starts producing GnRH (the hormone that kicks off the entire hormone cascade of your menstrual cycle each month)
✨ Your ovaries start maturing follicles again
✨ Estrogen rises, cervical mucus returns, LH surges
✨ You ovulate
✨ You get your period
✨ And YES—you can get pregnant naturally
One Last Thing: You Are Not Too Late
You may have heard the clock ticking.
Maybe your OB told you you’re running out of time.
Maybe someone said IVF is the only option left.
But what if that’s not true?
What if your body is just waiting for the right conditions?
