Why You Lost Your Period—and How to Get It Back So You Can Get Pregnant
If your period has gone missing, and no one seems to have a straight answer for you beyond "just go on the pill" or that “your best option for pregnancy is IVF”… you are not alone. You’re not broken. And despite what you’ve been told, this isn’t just something to brush off or rely on birth control or even fertility medication to fix.
If you're a high-achieving, wellness-obsessed, active woman who works out hard, eats "clean," and hasn't seen a period in months (or years), there's a name for what you're likely experiencing: hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA).
What is Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA)?
Hypothalamic amenorrhea is a condition where your brain (specifically the hypothalamus) stops sending the hormonal signals needed to trigger ovulation. Without ovulation, you don't get a period. This happens when your body perceives that it doesn't have enough energy to safely reproduce.
And that can be caused by:
Under-eating (even if it looks like "clean eating")
Over-exercising (even if it's normalized as #fitspo)
Mental and emotional stress
Low body fat or rapid weight loss
Perfectionism, people-pleasing, and high performance pressure
It's not that your body is broken. It's that your body is wise. It’s choosing survival over reproduction—because, from an evolutionary perspective, pregnancy is a luxury only afforded to those with safety and surplus.
"But I Thought I Was Healthy..."
So many women I work with are shocked to find out that their relentless pursuit of health is the very thing making them infertile.
The irony? You can look perfectly healthy on the outside—maybe even praised for your discipline, your fitness, your in-shape body—while inside, your body is running on empty.
HA isn’t just about being too thin. It can happen at any body size. It’s about the gap between what your body needs and what you’re giving it.
Why the Pill Doesn’t Fix the Problem
Hormonal birth control gives you a bleed, but not a real period. It doesn’t restore ovulation, it just masks the underlying hormonal shutdown. For many women, the pill actually delays the discovery of HA—because they don’t find out their cycles are missing until they stop taking it to try to conceive.
How to Recover from HA
The prescription is simple—but not always easy:
Eat More. Most women with HA need a minimum of 2,500 calories a day to restore hormonal function—especially if they're still active. Yes, even if you’re in a larger body. Energy availability is what matters.
Exercise Less. Take a hard look at how often and how intensely you move your body. More isn’t always better. For many, this means cutting out high-intensity workouts and focusing on gentle movement, especially if you’re actively trying to conceive.
Rest More. That means physical rest AND nervous system regulation. Recovery isn’t just about what you eat or how you move. It’s about the story your body believes. It needs to know you’re safe.
Challenge the Mindset. You can’t heal in the same mindset that made you sick. That means addressing your relationship with food, body, and control. This is the part our clients need the most support with, but is also the most transformational part of the healing journey, too.
Track Progress Holistically. Ovulation is a sign of recovery, but so is better sleep, improved digestion, regulated moods, and increased libido. Don’t just wait for the period—celebrate every milestone!
The Truth About Recovery
Recovery isn’t linear. It takes time. And yes, it might include weight gain. But that weight gain is needed and it means so much more than weight gain alone—it's hormones, safety, ovulation, and eventually, pregnancy.
What would happen if you trusted your body enough to let her lead?
Because here’s the truth: Your body wants to heal. She just needs you to stop standing in the way.
