If You’re at a Normal Weight, Do You Really Need to Eat More to Get Your Period Back?

"But I’m not underweight… so why is my period still missing?"

Have you thought this to yourself as you’re trying to determine why your period is missing and how to get it back?

If you answered yes, you’re not alone! It’s one of the most common (and frustrating) questions I get from clients who are trying to recover their period or get pregnant after hypothalamic amenorrhea:

The short answer? Yes, probably.

Here’s the long answer—and why your "normal weight" may not be enough.

You Can Be a Normal Weight and Still Have Hypothalamic Amenorrhea

Most of the women I work with are not technically underweight. Many fall squarely into the "healthy" BMI range. Some even have visible abs and a high level of muscle tone. They look healthy on the outside. But inside, their hormones are in survival mode.

Here’s what most doctors and even well-meaning nutritionists miss: it’s not just about your weight. It’s about your inputs.

  • Are you eating enough total calories (at least 2,500)?

  • Are you eating carbs consistently?

  • Are you resting enough?

  • Are you over-exercising or fasted training?

  • Is your nervous system stuck in a fight-or-flight state?

All of these factors impact whether your body feels safe enough to ovulate. And if it doesn’t feel safe, it’s going to shut that process down—no matter what your weight says.

Why Normal BMI Isn't Always Fertile BMI

To make estrogen (the hormone you need for ovulation), your body needs a certain amount of body fat. In fact, estrogen is produced in part by your fat cells. If your body fat percentage is too low—even if your BMI looks fine—your hormone production suffers.

  • A healthy body fat percentage for fertility is ~25%

  • A BMI of at least 22 is often needed for ovulation to resume in HA recovery

If you’re below those markers, you may look healthy, but your body may still be stuck in energy conservation mode.

Period Loss Isn’t About Weight. It’s About Energy Deficiency.

Let me be clear: you can lose your period at any size if your body isn’t getting enough fuel.

I see this all the time in clients who:

  • Eat 1,500-1,900 calories/day and think that’s "plenty"

  • Train intensely or fasted in the morning

  • Restrict carbs or dietary fat

Even if you’ve gained weight, if you’re still restricting carbs or undereating, your body isn’t going to ovulate. It’s not about the number on the scale—it’s about daily signals of safety.
